I'm no expert on b&w, I look at the likes of blackdog and pilgrim and experiment and try to learn. However, to my untutored eye this looks good. There is a good range of tone from a full black through to white. The weakest point is the sky which is a little bland, but it was not a strong sky in the colour version. On balance I prefer this. The use of b&w removes distraction and concentrates on the shapes. That's my opinion for what it is worth. Thanks for taking the trouble to do the conversion
EJWilkins: I'm grateful for your thoughts Bill. When I look at other people's mono pictures they always seem to be very good, yet whenever I try it I'm never quite satisfied.
This one? Well, I think the hole in the middle of the 'funnels' is too dark, in the colour version there's more of a gradient but I don't know how to keep that in the mono. I agree absolutely about the sky, but I'm not a PS person and wouldn't 'shop' one in, but even so I wonder if a cloud or two might have been a bit of a distraction .. do you think it would have spoiled the stark, clean lines?
