Silver-Studded Blue

I'm pretty sure this is a Silver-Studded Blue butterfly. If so I was really lucky to see it because it's quite rare. This is a small butterfly, found mainly on heathland which is where I spotted this one, it's resting on a heather. It managed to get around pretty quickly, helped by a handy breeze.

thanks for your comment, this picture is marvellous, my old compact's response is too slow for this shot it wouldnt be as clear as this.
EJWilkins: Thanks, although I'd spent about half an hour chasing this butterfly I still think it was a very lucky shot. I had loads that were well out of focus because it had moved before I got within range.
do you have photoshop? if you digitally blur the background, you can get a nice shallow depth of field like those taken with macro lenses. increase the colour punch using its 'auto-levels' will give you a good effect too. wink

you've done well to catch this one Ellie. Love those colours
EJWilkins: Thanks Tad, the colours are quite amazing the shot captures them far better than I'd expected.
another nice pic...
EJWilkins: Thank you smile
Nice shot, this is an amazing butterfly...
And you really are a lucky girl!
EJWilkins: Thank you MarcusAntonius, I am lucky to have seen it and be able to photograph it too.

Beautiful shot Ellie - practice and patience pay off smile
EJWilkins: *grin* Thanks Chris, Patience? Chasing the creature through the heather for about half an hour, until I managed to catch up with it! Glad you like the shot.

Thank you Vijay. I think it's a fabulous camera and I haven't started to explore using it 'properly' yet. My real interest is in photographing wildlife and it seems to be almost all I need. The camera is small enough and light enough to carry easily. It also responds very quickly when I hit the shutter. I might, one day, if I can afford it and they're still available, buy a set of filters and a better macro.
Hi Ellie smile
Very nice shot - The colors of this butterfly are sweet and i like thisq old blue - Thumbs up !
EJWilkins: Thanks Zeblgleb smile

This is a good picture Ellie. I've checked my butterfly book: the colour shade looks closer to a chalkhill blue, but the hind-wing markings and the habitat would definitely point towards a silver-studded blue, so I reckon you're right. I'd love to see one of these myself.
EJWilkins: Thanks Steve, both for the compliment and for taking the time to look it up. smile It was the wing markings and habitat that 'confirmed' it for me too. If you're where I think you are then a day trip might be worthwhile, next year, I took this one at the end of June, haven't seen any more of these since then.
Super capture! Butterflies are awesome to photograph -- colourful and not as fast as some of the other insects...

Great picture Ellie, your patience was well rewarded!
Nice pic Ellie, could possibly do with a slighly tighter crop, but otherwise, great use of macro.

just spotted this in your archive ellie and WOW!! thats a wee treasure you got there. i remember my father looking for these when we were young and how he used to get annoyed if we were carefree when he was on the trail of something good. very nice!
EJWilkins: Aww, thanks Rabby. I have to say I was rather pleased when I realised what I'd seen, and photographed. I hope your father managed to catch up with one too, despite having the offspring in tow! wink
