Robin's Pincushion

A 'Robin's Pincushion' grows in place of a flower bud on a wild Dog Rose, Rosa canina.

This 'oddity' is caused by the activity of larvae of a gall wasp Diplolepsis rosae. The galls can have as many as sixty or seventy separate chambers. This group was about two inches (5 cm) in diameter.

hey ellie,

wow, this shot is nothing short of amazing. i am not always impressed by flowers, but this is not the ordinary flower. i have never seen anything like this before, and you have captured the colors and details in a wonderful way.
EJWilkins: Thanks Nicole, this really is one of nature's "oddities" that I see quite often near where I live, but not in gardens, only on wild roses. I hope you get to see one for yourself one day. smile

EJWilkins: Thanks Ginnie, I really appreciate your comment. It was one of those "I'm not sure" pictures because it's so unusual, now I'm glad I did. smile
