Card sharp?

A very hot and sunny day Alcântara, a district of Lisbon, we spotted these local men playing cards in the shade of an arbour.

I wondered what the man was thinking ....

what a nice moment..ahh so relaxing smile
EJWilkins: Hi Nicola, thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. smile
hey ellie,

i love the candid nature of this shot. i particularly like the man's expression in the black and white checkered shirt. looks like he is trying to get a glimpse of the other guy's cards. have you thought about converting this to b/w?
EJWilkins: Hi Nicole, it was that man's expression which made me like this shot. I haven't tried b/w but I shall. Thanks

Very good moment captured here, how does this look in B&W, I think it will add an extra something to the shot.

Suby
EJWilkins: Thanks Suby, I haven't tried it in b/w but I shall.

cool shot Ellie,
i'd say the man is thinking "sh**, ma wifes gonna hammer me when i get home, thats half ma wages gone already" - he's definitely got that age old expression...hehe. ~ Rob.
p.s. your deviating!
EJWilkins: *grin* Maybe that's what he was thinking, he looks at least mildly concerned.

Cool picture. And I guess it's really cool in the shade by comparing it to the light outside the shade.
EJWilkins: Hi Rinda, yes it was pleasant under the climbing plants, a very good of keeping a bit cooler.
It seems so quiet, so peaceful. Lovely shot Ellie.
EJWilkins: Thanks Florence, they looked as if they were regulars there.
Great candid shot, Ellie!
EJWilkins: Thanks Sugarsnaps smile I appreciate your comment.

I can just imagine that these guys make a regular habit of playing cards together. Your shot makes me want to come up with a creative story about them and their lives back home. What a great way for them to wind down at the end of a day/week!
EJWilkins: Hi Ginnie, I think you could write a story round this one. I agree it's a good way to relax with friends, in lovely surroundings too.

Good framing and capture Ellie, well done smile
EJWilkins: Thanks Chris.
Hi there Ellie. I do like this shot a lot, but also agree with those who feel it may well be better in B/W. It is a great pity you could not have got in a bit closer to eliminate that annoying pole across the back of the left hand chap. Still great work though. Regards, Neil.
EJWilkins: Hi Neil, yes I'll try b/w. I agree about the pole, I spent ages trying to clone it out but it looked awful. There wasn't a lot of choice for angle of shot because of the climbing plants round the outside. smile

Groups of people playing cards in the gardens is a very common scene in Lisbon. Usually they are older than these guys you've captured so well.
(By the way, Alcântara is not in the outskirts of Lisbon, but one of the most tradicional Lisbon neighbourhoods, like Alfama, Mouraria and Madragoa).
Thanks for sharing it
EJWilkins: Hi Russo, thanks for your comment. I've corrected my description, I'm grateful to you for pointing this out.

For a moment I thought these guys got hold of nev's rump (his photo of today) - nice one Ellie
EJWilkins: I'll have to see Nev's picture, I haven't been online very long. Thanks Louis. smile
