photoblog image Masthead Gull

Masthead Gull

This Black Headed Gull, in its winter plumage, was perched right on the top of a mast. Because the tide was out it was only just above my eye level.

It was vaguely inquisitive but only, I think, because it was wondering if I had anything for it to eat.

nice long lines on the bird Ellie.. I've heard them called the rats of the sea - because i told them they eat anything.. I think it was weighing the methods of attack here.. In Vancouver the crows and seaguls and pigeons are just everywhere.. Nice sky colour too..
EJWilkins: Thanks Sorcha. I've heard them called all sorts of things, and rarely anything polite!
Pin Sharp! nice work Ellie
EJWilkins: Thanks Dotun smile

EJWilkins: Hi Florence, thanks. It'll be good to see your picture. I'm a bit pushed for time at the moment so if I don't spot it can you remind me please. smile

I really should go out more and take such pics, they are sadly lacking in my archives sad

Suby
EJWilkins: Hi Suby, I might have some spares you could borrow to save you some time wink
The inclusion of the yellow mast really made this shot. I like it.

I took some pictures of seagulls too yesterday, but the pesky creatures would not sit still long enough for me to get a shot. Nicely done, Ellie.
EJWilkins: Hi Martin, I know the feeling! I'm learning about their 'comfort zone', which here is something around twenty feet, any closer than that and they fly quite quickly. Glad you like the shot. smile

where I come from they take the ice cream out your hand! great shot.
EJWilkins: omigosh! I wouldn't like that to happen. I've heard of gulls getting quite a nuisance with people who are eating sandwiches, chips and so on.

Masthead gull indeed - nearly grabbed for my birders book as I have never heard of this type of gull. Then the rest of the blog page opened up and I could see your comments. Great shot.
EJWilkins: tongue That'll teach you to take too much notice of titles. But hey, I could have fun and make up all sorts of names of birds, and have you rummaging through books and round the internet for ages! wink
Thanks for your comment Louis, it really is appreciated, as always.
