Holding pens at the Beaulieu Road Pony Sales

This was taken from the steps leading up to the sale ring, looking almost exactly towards where I was standing when I took the shot I showed on 30th November.

The ponies are used to a lot of human contact. They live on the Forest where people walk and take their dogs for exercise. They are cared for by their owners and are checked regularly by the Agisters. http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/infd-6a4kq7

It is interesting that people apprear to cluster around specific stalls. Is something interesting going on there or are those just the better horses?
EJWilkins: It is interesting, yes, but I don't know enough about livestock to be able to say whether it was because the ponies in those holding pens were better than their neighbours. There was an "Aww" factor with some though, there were Shetlands and also donkeys for sale.

I like how the humans seem to be on sale here as well ellie.
EJWilkins: *grin* It does look a bit like that.
Hey Ellie, nice capture. Do people bargain for price? smile
EJWilkins: Hi Sarthak. The ponies are auctioned, people bid for them through an auctioneer. The highest bidder gets the pony. I've moved a picture of the sale ring into tomorrow's slot so you can get an idea of what happens.

Very alive - something is happening here. I like this kind of photo.
EJWilkins: I do too, but I've also found that getting too close in loses the impact of the activity. I'm not too happy about the large pen at the front of the shot, but that's 'how it is'. No more sales until next year, but I might go back and see what it looks like empty.
Oi! wheres your theme 10 portrait then!
EJWilkins: grin Haven't got one! Not yet anyway, one day I might have a picture of myself that I'm happy to put online.
Hi Ellie,
Something about this shot does not hit me somehow, but again I have looked for ways to improve it but I can't seem to come up with any. I only seem to critique shots I think I would have done something better but this one I have no idea.
EJWilkins: Yep, I know what you mean. It's a straightforward 'photo' that records the place from a particular angle, nothing more. I think there's little that can be done to 'improve' it without losing detail, believe me I tried. So, I'll be going back again some time next year to take another.
Hi Ellie. One of the things I really enjoy about this shot, is how your diagonals lead to where the greatest concentration of activity is. Very nicely composed shot with lots of "action". Very well done. Regards, Neil.
EJWilkins: Err, yes, they sort of do, don't they? Purely accidental, honestly!

HA. As Neil says, I, too, like the diagonals! I also like this because it's something I've never experienced! Always so good to learn something new. Thanks for letting us see it through your eyes. smile
EJWilkins: Thanks Ginnie. We'll have to see what everybody thinks of tomorrow's shot, with a head and a shoulder blocking the view! ;-)

Good series from the sales Ellie, when are the next ones? wink
EJWilkins: Hi Chris, and thanks ... not done yet, there are a few more to come!

There aren't any more sales this year, I don't think there will be any until the spring shows/sales, perhaps in May? There'll be information here "New Forest Pony Publicity Group" >> http://www.newforestpony.com/misc/BRoad.htm I'm including the link because I'm sure to lose it!
