photoblog image Lovers' Knot?

Lovers' Knot?

Taken at Hatchett Pond, near Beaulieu, these swans were working together to break the ice in a shallow area of the pond.

I thought this 'Lovers' Knot' was almost right for Valentine's Day, but I'd already uploaded something else to use.

my gosh, how do you find these ellie? well done!
EJWilkins: I was just watching the swans, they were breaking the ice. They moved closer together and seemed to start 'talking' to each other by moving their necks ... and this was the result. I was lucky to be at the right angle to catch the reflection. I'd have been happier without the grass .. but I'd have had to be standing in icy water to be at the right angle, which might have been foolish smile
Beautiful!
Ahhhhh Ellie, this is lovely. You should have posted this for the theme on the 16th (see the home page). Or do you have some sort of cunning plan?
EJWilkins: I've already loaded pictures for the next week or so, including one for tomorrow which may not be as unusual as this one, but it's what I wanted for Valentine's Day. wink
very sweet shot ellie. i love the treatment too.
Very nice capture, Ellie. This is about as close as you can get to b/w in a color shot. Did you desaturate the grass in the foreground? I like that the beak is the only real spot of color. Very nicely spotted (and/or processed)!
EJWilkins: I slightly desaturated and then slightly enhanced the beaks, the rest of the picture was as near monochrome as nature allows. It's been very dark here recently. I was very lucky to see this picture, and also to see them working together to break the ice, something I've never know swans would do.
A very nice capture, Ellie. The reflection of their necks in the water completes the knot. If you have kept something even better for Valentine's, I am keen to see what that will be...
EJWilkins: Hi, I'm not sure if you'll think tomorrow's picture is 'better', but I like it. I've listed pictures for the next week or so because we'll be away. I thought this one was too nice to leave out, so I slotted it in wink

EJWilkins: Thanks Chris smile
lovely shot./
Fantastic... Their neck like a heart... Ellie you should have posted it for the Valentine contest day !!! Great image really !! smile
This is just amazing. i love tthe reflection of the heart shape. Perfect for valentine's day tomorrow. WELL DONE!
Good V-day anticipation! I love this photo, Ellie, not just the knot on the necks but also the unforced b&w, the ice pieces in the water and the left swan almost not wanting to submerge his leg in it, the gray sky tinting the water... Superb!
EJWilkins: I took quite of few pictures of the swans that day, I've never seen them working together as they were ... to break the ice. It was fascinating to watch. This one was a bit special, I'm really pleased you like it. smile

No, no you can't let this one go by. If you have to have 2 pics in the theme, do it smile Nike

Excellent - and do i detect some pp here?
EJWilkins: A little pp Louis, very light desaturation and very light recolouring of the beak and its reflection. Because of the light levels and the scene, the picture was virtually monochrome, although it was taken as a colour image.
I think this perfect. i love the reflection of the heart. Well done.

Beautiful! Very clear reflection. I love it.
What a nice picture for The St Valentin Ellie... A so nice heart by thoses swan's necks...I like it
Lovely shot! If you hadn't said they were working together to break the ice, I'd never have known it. It's not something I'd think they would do.
EJWilkins: If I hadn't seen it for myself I wouldn't have believed it. They pulled themselves forward then stepped onto the ice and almost thumped their bodies down onto it. They didn't do it for very long, it was hard work and quite noisy too.
A great shot for St Valentine isn't it ? smile

Nice shot Ellie, and the lighting on this shot has just inspired me to make an alteration to my swan shot that's coming up on Friday. Cheers, Steve
EJWilkins: Darn it Steve, won't be here to see it. I'll try to remember when we get back from our trip away. smile
Me .. inspire you? Gobsmacked is the right word!

OMG, Ellie. We'll just say this was your teaser for tomorrow! What a splendid find. I love the almost-selective coloring look here. So perfectly done.
EJWilkins: I wish Ginnie, this is probably a 'better' picture than tomorrows, but I chose tomorrows one ages ago and I didn't want to change it. I think you'll see why. smile
