photoblog image Mallard trio

Mallard trio

I think this fits nicely with Sparklite's "Rule of Three", which I'm sure he'll explain if you ask him.

Taken at Hatchett Pond, near Beaulieu on a wet but fairly bright day. These birds were half asleep.

Taken with a Dimage z5.

..........

A week or so of bird images.
The first time I've had a 'theme' but I've quite a few pictures I'd like to share and see what you think, and what might be done to improve them 'for next time'.

.....
I'm sorry about the anti-spam code. I edited my profile and the code turned itself on, I can't find any way of turning it off.

I've almost gone into a laughing fit over this pic, Ellie (maybe I'm too tired?). To see them standing there, half asleep...and then Genevieve says it's a lady with 2 mates...I don't know but it really strikes me funny. Besides another wonderful, colorful shot on a gray day, thanks for the laugh. smile
EJWilkins: I reckon she is making sure wink

this one IS funny, ellie...like yesterday's for me. since these guys are huddled in on themselves (from the cold?) they appear like a cartoonish interpretation of a duck. a body, two legs, a head, but no neck. just makes me chuckle.
I didn't know that the rule of three belonged to anyone in particular. wink It looks like that female has two big bodyguards protecting her.
EJWilkins: It's a bit of a joke Karen, something I read on Iain's site about having three of an item in a picture wink
I raised ducks for years including mallards. They're my favorite duck. Up really late tonight. Never been here at Shutterchance this time of day before. Feels weird.
Amused scene, Ellie. I like this composition of the family of ducks!

I love it! I like the way they have their heads pulled back and tucked in. What amazes me though is how oddly feathers turn out in pictures (mine too). It must be that they are so smooth that they reflect light in very odd ways. It always looks like someone's run a median filter on the duck's... know what I mean? I know you haven't -- it just astonishes me how their feathers look. smile Great shot.
EJWilkins: The feather thing is quite odd Iain, I've noticed it several times. I think it has to be to do with the angle the light is hitting the feathers.I don't know what a median filter is, so I'd better go and look it up. smile
Ah : You've got ducks too Ellie ! This female is well protected. Lovely picture ! What are they watching ?
EJWilkins: Your duck was nothing short of wonderful Roland smile
These are sitting there, doing nothing in particular, perhaps waiting for a person to come along with some scraps of food.

this one makes me smile, it's a great one Ellie, very good angle smile good catch
They look cold. I didn't think this was possible for ducks. Nice shot, Ellie!
Another beauty .. Well done

rule of third.... space to guide the eye into the image....not necessary but it will make the image more interesting...try an image what they are looking at before pressing the shutter?
EJWilkins: The 'rule of three' thing is a bit of a joke, something about pictures having to have three of everything to make them balanced and interesting wink
I agree that the 'rule of thirds' is handy, but not essential to a good picture, I've seen some corking images that have completely ignored the rule.

Wonderful picture...interesting, humorous, pretty to look at. I think it is my favourite thus far in your series, Ellie.
EJWilkins: Thanks ray, I'm really pleased you think so smile
It looks like Lady Duck has two bodyguards to protect her wink
A lovely sleep trio. But what happened to ladies first? smile

come on Ellie, you just cloned the third one in to keep Iain happy!! wink lol, lovely shot. mal
EJWilkins: Oh hey Mal, come on, I can't manage to clone something and also change its colour. But, if I'd been really bored I might have tried to make a fourth duck wink

I don't believe mal. The point of the beak differs between the two males.

Excellent detail - some form of a love triangle?
I've always been facinated by the green colour on their heads - that is a beautiful colour you have captured
EJWilkins: I think it's rather amazing that their eyes match the green feathers.
They're fake aren't they, you just place those fake ones down there and snapped away ! smile They are not two bodygaurds as they are keeping an eye on each other while she sleeps, I heard them talking. " Hey bob, look she's sleeping so why don't you just amble off and I wont tell her you just tried to beat me up so you could have her to yourself, you know she hates stuff like that. " smile
EJWilkins: No they're not fake! Blooming cheek! smile
Wait till the bickereing starts wink
what a nice trio ellie!
