photoblog image Statue of Christ at Lisbon

Statue of Christ at Lisbon

This statue of Christ stands on the south bank of the Tagus looking towards Lisbon.

It was built in 1959 and inspired by the famous statue in Rio de Janeiro.

The statue is 28m (90ft) tall. It is possible to go to up in a lift and view the city from the top of the 82m (270ft) high pedestal.

I took this picture from the car, while crossing the '25th April Bridge'

I wish you a peaceful Good Friday

Very clear, crisp shot Ellie. We have a huge Jesus statue on the outskirts of our city too and its very popular. Its the same statue, with JEsus standing with his arms open, but He is only carved waist-up... making it rather huge, smack in the middle of nowhere
EJWilkins: That sounds very nice Mia, do you have a picture of it?

wow, that's a big statue. you've presented it in a very bold way, i think, center of the image, surrounded only by gray clouds so it stands out. good job here, and thanks for posting it! happy good friday to you, as well!
EJWilkins: I think purists would say he should be to the right of the picture, using hte 'rule of thirds' but I liked it this way. Thanks Alex.
Hi Ellie,
Both you and Ginnie have captured the "spirit" of the holiday, and I appreciate it. This one is so powerful too. Thank you for posting it.
EJWilkins: Thanks Kay smile
It definitely fits the occasion. Enjoy the long weekend if this is one in the UK.
EJWilkins: Thanks Martin.
I Hope you too enjoy this weekend, we're all at home together which makes itt quite special. smile

Yes, Ellie, so perfect for today. His stance is like the cross, outstretched to God of the Universe and to all humankind. So "simple" and yet so powerful.

Have a wonderful and restful Easter weekend with those you love.
EJWilkins: Thanks Ginnie. We're all together here, which is lovely. smile

Impressive piece of engineering...crisp, but stark, picture.
EJWilkins: It's an impressive, and rather moving sculpture too Ray. Perched on the top of a hill with nothing behind it. It looks over Lisbon.

when I saw this shot, I thought of Rio (even though I have never been there) so it was good to have the explanation. You did a good job from the car Ellie !!!
EJWilkins: The first time I saw this I didn't know which was the first to have been built, so of course we looked it up. I hope that, next time we're there, we'll be able to go right up to the statue and perhaps the viewing platform too.
I took several, this was the only one that was any good, the others all had bits of the bridge structure in them.
Thanks smile
Thank you Ellie. I needed to see this. Very inspiring. And it rekindled something within.
EJWilkins: Good, and thank you for telling me smile
great angle - Happy Easter!!
EJWilkins: You too Chantal. Take care smile

Very appropriate. Pity the clouds didn't provide more definition.
Great shot.
EJWilkins: Couldn't choose the weather Louis, it started raining shortly after. Thanks smile

Well taken from car Ellie, hope your easter goes well *pals* Chris smile
EJWilkins: Thanks Chris, al the others I took contained blurry bits of the bridge so weren't much use.
Have a good Easter, will be in touch. smile
You have found an image appropriate by this time, Ellie!
