Cygnets hatched May 5th or 6th 2007

I visited the swan's next yesterday and found six cygnets, they must have hatched either late yesterday or earlier today. When the swan moved I could see that there were still at least two more eggs left to hatch.

I took quite a few pictures and will try to share some of them during this week. The nest is in quite an awkward position, with a screen of willow between it and the closest bank. If I had a really long lens I would have been able to take some from further away, and without anything in between me and the nest.

What a lovely shot, Ellie! These little cygnets are precious. Momma's very attentive too. smile
EJWilkins: Thanks Kay, they're little bundles of very active fluff!
Wonderful, Ellie, just wonderful. You're very lucky to have this opportunity.
EJWilkins: I am lucky, very lucky smile

they're gorgeous, ellie! well done, great dedication to get this. i'm looking forward to seeing all the rest!
EJWilkins: I hope you like the rest as much, it's going to be difficult to choose which ones to use, as you can imagine I took quite a few of this special little family smile
Ohhh Ellie, that charming photo. If the cygnets had been watching at the camera this photo it would be of poster!

Ohhh Ellie, que encantadora foto. Si los patitos hubiesen estado mirando a la cámara esta foto sería de poster !!
EJWilkins: Thank you Jose. Typical of little birds, when they were all looking at the camera the branches blew in between me and the nest! Hopefully I'll be able to have exactly the right picture for you before the end of the week. smile
Gracias Jose. ¡Típico de pequeños pájaros, cuando eran todos que miraban la cámara fotográfica los ramas soplaron entre mí y la jerarquía! Esperanzadamente podré tener exactamente el cuadro derecho para usted antes del final de la semana. smile

Super picture, Ellie. Nice subject, and expertly composed. I especially like the way you have brought out the proud, assertive presence of the parent in this situation.
EJWilkins: (replied Weds am ... it's interesting to see the different 'feel' of pictures, depending on the light catching the swan's eye. Here she does look quite assertive and in control doesn't she. The one for Weds is different

Ellie, this is so wonderful! It appears that you may have been down on the ground to get this shot. It's an instant "likey" for me and one you should be very proud of. Those babies are darling!
EJWilkins: Yes, I was horizontal. Thanks Deb smile
what a lovely capture

Wow, how lucky to experience nature like this. Lovely photo, the one on the far right is looking straight at the camera and is so cute.
EJWilkins: I am very, very lucky indeed. I do know that. smile
magnifique cette photo
EJWilkins: merci Nadine smile J'ai quelques autres photographies des "Swans" pour cet semaine. J'espère que vous les aimerez aussi.

EJWilkins: Thanks Helen, they are rather gorgeous aren't they. smile
so sweet ellie. you really captured a tender moment.
EJWilkins: Thank you Genevieve smile
Your patience and dedication has certainly paid off! Great picture with perfect balance. Wonderful.
EJWilkins: Thanks Ros, I think it was well worth it. smile
With a quack and a waddle, and a waddle and a quack...

These ugly ducklings are just gorgeous, thanks for sharing this with us, Ellie. Truly, a precious moment to savour. I gain a real sense of what's important when I see images like this. I feel like swans are the bird equivalent to Pandas sometimes. The correlation between them and ecosystems' well-being are, for me, inextricably bound.

Lovely.
EJWilkins: You're right. Swans had a tough time because they ingested a lot of lead from fishing weights, I think in general they've recovered and we're also taking much more care of our watercourses.
Aaawww - simply precious - Must say Ellie, another beautiful birthing moment smile. Thanks for sharing.
EJWilkins: Thanks Ade smile

Wow. Nice one Ellie. I passed a swans nest myself yesterday and saw that there were a bunch of cygnets. I don't think I'd be able to get a shot as close as this though - mostly because it's on the other side of the canal!
EJWilkins: The thing is that I think I'd got sort of used to the adults moving around quite slowly. The cygnets are like jet-propelled balls of fluff! I bet you'd be able to do better, with a long lens, even from the other side of a canal. smile
this is a lovely image, it shows a mothers love for infants, well captured
EJWilkins: Thanks. smile
Oh Ellie, they're so cute !! Lovely little birds... !
EJWilkins: They're absolutely gorgeous FLorence, I'm gla dyou think so too smile

You are so good at shots like this, Ellie, especially of the animal kingdom. I think you could do that as a living! Your patience and persistence really did pay off for all of us who are eager to see what you have found.

Congratulations!
EJWilkins: I had a few to choose from, as I'm sure you can imagine. Some good, some less so. You'll see some experiments, I think I've got the courage to post them and seek opinions.
I'm going to have to be very stern with myself and make sure I'm not over there every single day otherwise the hard disc will fill up very quickly.
Thanks Ginnie smile

WOW!! WOOW!!! WOOOW!!!
AMAZING, truly beautiful picture! Not only cygnets are so sweet but also composition and colours so good! You are truly professional in birds photography, I agree 100% with Ginnie!!!
I think it is not surprising that this shoot goes into my Likeys smile
EJWilkins: I hope you like some of the others I upload. I'm going to try qa variety, the only problem will be sifting through to reduce them to a week's worth. I've probably got enough for several weeks, and by then everybody would get bored.
Thank you for your very generous comment. smile

Lovely!
EJWilkins: Thanks MArtin smile
its a lovely lovely shot...
EJWilkins: smile Thanks Sam
They'll keep mum & dad busy for a while smile
EJWilkins: They certainly will, I saw them again today (Tuesday) they were on the water, talk about whizzing bundles of fluff!
This is absolutley lovely Ellie, can't wait to see if the other two hatch.
EJWilkins: Thanks Johnny smile
There were 7 cygnets today and no eggs in the nest. It's possible I saw a shell, either that or one of the cygnets has been taken by a pike. There are some huge ones in this pond.

Well whatever is supposed to be between you and the swans has more or less dissapeared. But if mr Ellie is going to read this, let me be crisp and clear about the fact that you definitely need a 50-500 with a 1.4 converter.

Great catch of the hatch smile Great picture.
EJWilkins: About twenty five feet or thereabouts. wink

Mr Ellie will have read this, and he knows my dilemma which is do I 'need' a long lens or do I 'need' a macro lens? Actually, we really do need a new dishwasher!

Another sharp picture and as good a 'swan' picture as I've seen. I don't know how close you were for this but it looks too close to a new mother for my courage.

I once walked along the banks of the River Avon at Amesbury only to discover my way barred by the male. No way was he going to let me past. I understood when I saw the nest just off the path in the undergrowth, with mother and cygnets at home.
EJWilkins: I was, umm, closer than I should have been! wink They are very tolerant of people, but if a dog comes anywhere near they soon take a lot of notice ... big wings and hissing, same if big fish come too close to the cygnets.
Hooray! What a beautiful family they are. I love the composition of the shot.
EJWilkins: Hooray .. that's exactly what I said when I realised they'd hatched smile

I am going crazy!.. lol, I'm liking cute fluffy animals! lol

But what I doo see El' is a very well executed image, you are right down at eye level and seeing the world from their perspective, lovely image. mal
EJWilkins: No, you're not going crazy! It's called spring fever! tongue
I was down at eye level, flat on the ground in fact. I think it was worth the effort. Thanks Mal. smile
