photoblog image Swan and cygnets on nest (hatched 5th-7th May)

Swan and cygnets on nest (hatched 5th-7th May)

The glint of light in her eye makes me think she could be proudly saying, "Look what I've got!"

The cygnets are, of course, looking in all sorts of different directions. They don't stay still for more than a moment.

.....

I'll try to put a picture of the swans and/or cygnets every day this week, the first was Monday's picture

.....

Update:
We sat and watched the family for a little more time today, they were on the water for about five minutes, bobbing around like jet-propelled bundles of fluff. The parents were constantly 'talking' to the cygnets, it sounded like soft growls.

Yes...I can see "proud" in the expression. Is the eye the only part of the animal that gives us these changes of expression...wow...some eye.
Beautifully composed image, Ellie. I am liking this series.
EJWilkins: Glad you're liking them Ray.
I don't really know about the expression, with this one I think it's just the little spark of light that makes the difference.
The adults do demonstrate when they're alert, they stretch their necks and look in the appropriate direction. The male in particular spreads his wings upwards, making himself appear very much bigger, and hisses loudly. A scarey experience.

Aaaww, this is trully a touching moment captured.

Suby
EJWilkins: Thanks Suby, I appreciate this and am glad you're as touched as I've been with these youngsters smile
Another beautiful scene. The mother's eye makes a great focal point.
EJWilkins: It does, and it was pure chance I assure you smile

fabulous shot ellie. love the framing here.
EJWilkins: Thanks Neal. I think there's also something about the near square, I quite like the proportion
Ellie, your photos of the swan family are wonderful, and I like the descriptions you provide. Wonderful story!
EJWilkins: Thanks Kay, I'm so pleased you're enjoying them smile

Sooooooooooooo cute ..lovely capture ..looks like they are having a small discussion ;o) !
EJWilkins: You're so right! I wonder what they could have been saying?
this is AMAZING. This is one of the best nature shots i've ever seen. I have a swan picture up today and i'm embarassed because it is pathetic against this! wow wow wow. And those little swanlings! They're so cute!!! Amazing capture/framing. At only 100mm you still had to be pretty close??
EJWilkins: 100mm ... works out at 200mm with the Olympus x2, I think it helps a bit. I was about 20 feet away for this one. I took a lot of pictures, many didn't work out but it's left me with a few to choose from.
I've learned to spot meter off the swan, take a shot and then compensate, usually downwards otherwise the white ends up all one tone. I can boost the gamma back up if needed, which I did with this one.

Ohhh !!! Aquí sí. Estamos empezando a componer el gran poster !! Encantador, Ellie smile

Ohhh! Here yes. We are beginning to compose the great one to poster! Lovely, Elliesmile
EJWilkins: I'll see if I can find one with all the cygnets looking in the same direction, but it won't be tomorrow's picture. Thanks Jose smile
Veré si puedo encontrar uno con todos los cygnets que miran en la misma dirección, pero no será cuadro de mañana. Gracias Jose smile
Captivating Ellie. I'm loving this live picture story.
EJWilkins: smile That's good, glad you like them. These pictures are quite special for me
Like the idea of a picture story, it's always fun when there's a story smile! cool idea.
EJWilkins: Thanks Ade, I'm really pleased you're enjoying these smile
I have to say again how lucky you are to have gotten these shots. This one is my favorite so far but I've loved them all.
EJWilkins: I know, absolutely, that I'm extremely lucky Mary not only to have had the privilege of seeing these cygnets but also to have been able to take the pictures without interference from the adult swans. They have been remarkably tolerant. I rather like this one too, but I think you might like tomorrow's as well wink
so sweet!!
EJWilkins: smile Thanks Chantal
Are you camping out ? Perhaps you ought to send this to Heather eh ! This is again a lovely capture Ellie and if you want I'll print it out for you as I think this would make a marvelous print. Better yet pick out the one you like best, send me the whole file and I'll send you back what ever size print you want.
EJWilkins: No, not camping out, I'd get too cold and the Verderers would get cross with me! You know, I have a feeling Heather might not appreciate a copy of this wink
I will take you up on your offer of printing one of these, thank you. smile But, I don't yet know which one I'd call my favourite, you'll see why. What do I need, resolution and so on, for it to be worthwhile?
Aahhh - excellent photo Ellie - very cute!
EJWilkins: smile Thanks Bernie
I am enjoying this series! Their color and texture makes the swans really stand out from the background. Very compelling photography, Ellie!
EJWilkins: I'm glad you're enjoying them Martin, I am too. I'm 'having a ball' choosing what I think are the best of those I've taken. smile

Great capture. Nice framing.

Just an idea. Instead of daily for a week how about one day per week until they have grown up. smile
EJWilkins: Admission time wink ... all the pics you've seen so far were taken on the first day. I've got enough to last a while! But, I think I might add one a week, as long as I can carry on going over there regularly to check on their progress. Do you think that'd work?
Very very very beautiful Ellie...
EJWilkins: Merci beaucoup, beaucoup Roland smile
Very cute capture Ellie smile
EJWilkins: Thanks Magnus smile
Very cute smile
EJWilkins: smile Thanks Chris
