Sintra

*** update: 23 Oct ***

Am online again, with an old and fairly slow laptop. Hoping  to get a "big computer" up and running within the next couple of weeks, until then I won't be updating my blog. In the meantime I'm going to have a lovely time looking at everybody's wonderful pictures. :)

Thank you so much for all your messages.
I'm working through a large backlog of emails and promise to reply soon.

................................
Hi everybody,

We're away on holiday from early next week. I was going to take a break until the middle of August but I've been forced offline earlier than planned because while I was sorting out some pictures earlier today my computer siezed up. It looks as if I've got a problem with the hard drive, which I won't be able to get fixed until we are back home again. All being well I'll be able to bring you some more pictures of St Cross another time, showing the inside of the church and the other buildings.

I'm using another computer at the moment, so obviously haven't got access to any of my stuff, no email addresses, no pictures, nothing. It's amazing how deblilitating it is, even after only a few hours, and I've also realised it's daft to rely completely on electronic archives ... and I've just realised this computer doesn't have an online spell-checker, so please forgive any typos I haven't noticed.

I'm rather pleased though, that I'd uploaded more pictures than I've used, this is one of them. It was taken last summer, outside the National Palace in Sintra, Portugal. It was a glorious day, brilliant sunshine and not a cloud in the sky. Hopefully we'll have some more days like this while we're away this time, to make up for this years grey, cloudy and wet English summer.

Hi Ellie, thank you for your comment.

And, as always Ellie, your photography is amazing!!! Love this photograph, and especially your old town - Christchurch hehe.

I wonder if it is as big as my Christchurch? It is funny, we talk about our city as if it has been around for many many centuries, but it has only been around for 200 years!

I would love to spend a day in your Christchurch, however, nothing beats the blue sky in my post-modern town. Yes, where was the blue sky? Just teasing, but thank you for sharing with us your town too. Loved every shot!

I have been blogging on a new site, so please check it out: www.plagiarist.aminus3.com; I have been re-touching old photographs [ones that have already been posted here], but new ones will be posted up in November. I have been under a lot of work at Uni, so haven't been around much. And, love spending money on other things too lol. I hope everything is good with you too, have a great holiday! All the best with everything Ellie, keep smiling!

Cheers,
Raymond
EJWilkins: (4th Nov) Hi Raymond. Our Christchurch (the original one!) is a small town, it's a place well worth visiting though because it's very friendly and quite pretty.
With a bit of luck I'll be back here more often from some time this week, using my wonderful new computer, all I need to do now is get some pictures. Hope you're well. smile
Hi Ellie, interesting building. Hope you do have more pictures of this place to share.
Have a nice holiday !!!
This building is very unique in color and decoration. I like the way you've positioned the spire amid the trees.

Enjoy your holiday and best of luck on getting the computer back in working order.
I hope you're having a wonderful holiday Ellie!

He gets about, that Disney!

This is a lovely building that deserves a bit more attention. I was once told (way back in art class when I was at school, actually) that if you include a fence or a barrier of some sort there should be an opening, such as an open gate, to allow the viewer into the picture, otherwise the eye can't move around. I think this one suffers a bit from not having an opening in that concrete wall, which creates a ditinct barrier.

Having remembered that, I'm now going to find some hedgerow or fence with a gate in it to test the theory again!

Trust the hols were fabulous and I.T. behaves itself on your return. Looking forward to the pictures.
EJWilkins: (4 Nov) You're absolutely right about the need for a gap in the stone barrier to draw the eye through, trouble was there wasn't one. It stopped people falling down the hill and the roof you see here is 'as was'.

Hols were fabulous thanks, although very much a distant memory now, and I've got one or two sunny pictures that might be worth sharing.
Lovely bright and gay image Ellie. Missing you on Shutter more and more as each week goes by! Hope you have had a lovely holiday and the computer problems can be resolved and that you haven't lost all your images. Looking forward to your return and to see where you've been. Best wishes, Jose
EJWilkins: (4th Nov) Thanks Jose. smile
Still not sure about any of my 'old' pictures being recovered, which is a great pity (for me), but as of today have got a new computer up and running so can start taking some more, and can possibly use some from the summer, the ancient laptop simply isn't good enough for images. Hope all's well with you.

EJWilkins: (4th Nov) Thanks Ade, it's a pity I wasn't around, but even so it would have been a bit too far, perhaps there can be another one a bit further south? What do you reckon? When the days get a bit longer again?
Ellie it's been forever! Come back! wink

I hope your holiday has been wonderful. We just miss you.
EJWilkins: (4th Nov) ... almost back Iain.
I hope you are just enjoying the summer away from computers and enclosed spaces, but we sure would like you back!
EJWilkins: (4th Nov) Did enjoy the holiday, it was wonderful. A wonderful new computer now so will be back posting before too long, when I've managed to sort out a few pictures. Have got to get out there and take some now!
Oh my, you've been gone a long time. Hope you get things fixed up soon. Meanwhile, enjoy your holiday.
EJWilkins: (4th Nov) Thanks Karen. It's been an absolute age, our holiday was wonderful. Have a brand new computer now, so I can get my camera out again. smile

Hi Ellie. Sorry to hear about your PC problems, it happens to us all. The only advice I can give you is to invest in a couple of large external disks (300GB) and make a double backup of all your work. It's the only way to be sure you won't lose anything. Anything stored permanantly on a computer disk drive is always going to be in danger. Hope all goes well with the restore, and your holidays are not plagued by nightmares about crashing harddrives!
This is a wonderful image which gives off a feeling of heat.
EJWilkins: Thanks Drew, it was one of those accidents waiting to happen. When 'it' broke I'd been backing up a lot onto discs, so didn't lose everything. Some has been recovered but there's a lot of data that's completely corrupted. We now have the belt and braces of a large external hard drive as well as a burner, as well as a brand new computer, so with a bit of luck I won't be caught out again. All I need to do now is get used to the new setup and get out there with the camera. smile
Hey Ellie, haven't seen any pics form you for ages. Everything OK? Great picture by the way?
EJWilkins: (4th Nov) Have only recently got back online Chris, but that was with an underpowered laptop. Now got a wonderful new PC, but not many pictures, so need a while to get back up and running. Thanks a million for your message ... I haven't any old emails, they were all lost, could do with chatting again about visiting Winchester, perhaps?
Hi Ellie... Come back won't you? sad We miss your photos.
EJWilkins: (4th Nov) ... still almost back ;-)

WHERE ARE YOU ELLIE???
EJWilkins: (4th Nov) Where am I? I've been here all the time, just not attached to the net. *wink* Will be back soon, all being well, in the meantime I'm going to spend a bit of time getting myself up to speed with being online again and looking at other people's pictures.
Oh! Ellie! Please! Say me to know the day to me that you will be definitively on line! I want to be of first in seeing your new photos!
EJWilkins: (4th Nov) I promise I will tell you Jose. I hope it will be some time this coming week. I am getting used to this new computer, then I will look at my pictures from the summer and choose some to share.

Beautiful ! Lovely architecture !
EJWilkins: (4th Nov) You're right, there is some beautiful architecture in Portugal, and it isn't' hard to find either. This was at Sintra, right next to the National Palace.
Welcome back Ellie - looking forward to some new photos.
EJWilkins: (4th Nov) Aww, thanks Bernie. With a bit of luck there'll be some pictures later this week. I'm just getting my head round this new computer, then need to look through the images from the summer and perhaps also get out there with my camera again ... it's been a long time and I'm sure I've forgotten almost everything.

Hello Ellie!!! welcome back...so good to see you here around!
I'm waiting for new posts now...smile
Petra
EJWilkins: (4th Nov) Lovely to hear from you Petra, but you'll have to wait a bit longer for any pictures, probably later this week. It's suddenly quite scary thinking of getting back into the swing of things ... what to choose and so on.
Glad to see you nearly back in action. You've been gone too long. All the best, Dave.
EJWilkins: (4th Nov) That's so kind of you to say so David, it's been a loooong while. With a bit of luck I'm almost up and running again, all I've got to do now is find some pictures to use.
love the way the building roof stands out against the trees.
EJWilkins: Kind of you to say so, thanks.
NICE TO SEE YOU BACK ! smilesmilesmile
EJWilkins: (8 Nov)
Aww, thanks Florence. All I've got to do now is sort out a picture or two and then pluck up the courage to upload them onto the new layout.

Hi Paul, and thanks a million. smile
'tis all taking a bit longer than I'd expected, I'm remarkably rusty but with a bit of luck will get something online soon. I'd forgotten how much time I need.
Hi Ellie looking forward to see you back online smile

Ellie, I came across your pictures, they are just beautiful, I am just a starter who has to learn a lot, but just looking at the other SC, gives me the motivation to try more, hope to see more of you soon smile
EJWilkins: (8 Nov)
Hi Astrid,
How kind of you to drop by, thanks.
I'm rapidly realising just how much I've forgotten in the time I've been away, so I'd reckon we're at about the same place. ;-)
Enjoy Shutterchance, it's a great community as well as somewhere to see some brilliant photographs from all over the world.
