photoblog image Owl week

Owl week

The sixth and last of my bunch of pictures of owls. There are just two different birds in the series, and each picture was taken in and around Lymington during 9th December, which was a dull, damp day.

This is a Snowy Owl from the Owl Sanctuary in Ringwood, and was making quite a lot of noise.

Owls are often brought into Lymington, to get them used to people and also I expect for publicity.

~ Gallaxy ~ has some lovely pictures of other birds from the Sanctuary, taken while she was there.

I thought the picture had a warm Christmassy background.

..........

Saturday is the day we do most of our household shopping, all through the year and today will be no different. I wonder how many just go on a Christmas shopping spree without questioning why we give gifts.

I know a lot of people celebrate Yule, or other religious feasts, at this time of year but thought it would be OK to mention a campaign here in the UK to "Make Christmas His Story" <-- read the words very carefully..

Whatever it is that you celebrate on 25th December I hope you share your day with those you love.

A quite beautiful portrait, Ellie.
Thailand is an interesting study at Christmas time. There are very few christians in Thailand, but that doesn't stop the retailers from turning this into their biggest shopping season. All the usual stuff is in evidence...santas, nativity scenes, enormous fake pine trees covered in fake snow, piped carols. There's even a bit of easter paraphenalia...heck, why hold back if there is an opportunity to excite the buyers. There is not a public hol, so I will be working December 25.
EJWilkins: Thanks Ray. It's interesting to hear what happens at this time of year in Thailand, a completely different cultural background from this end of Europe.

Another textbook shot, Ellie.

And thanks for the link about making Christmas "his story." I always thing of Christmas FIRST as the Christ Child's birthday! So Happy Birthday!
EJWilkins: Glad you like this one Ginnie, it's almost my favourite because this bird was such an energetic character.
It's a special celebration, isn't it smile
With it's mouth open, I can almost hear the load screech. Lovely profile shot. Don't even get me started on "Christmas".
EJWilkins: Err, yes, I wrote lots and deleted it, not really the right time or place wink And another yes, this was a very noisy owl.

Another great looking portrait. They look so fluffy and soft, but I am sure they are rather standoffish in person.
EJWilkins: Owls always make me think of the one in Winnie the Pooh, or Beatrix Potters creations - they were quite standoffish too wink
I'd never really thought of this as a 'portrait' - thanks for the concept, I'm glad you've enjoyed these.
beautiful owl indeed, and I agree with you there is a hint of santa claus in the background. Happy Holidays.
EJWilkins: Is is a beautiful creature, and very content too even though it was making itself heard.

Ellie, are these owls indoors or outside? You've done such a great job with catching them so close-up and in such detail.

The spirit of Christmas giving is best celebrated in our day to day lives, I think.
EJWilkins: They were all outside, on their handlers' glove and there were quite a lot of people looking at them, including lots of children.
You're right, of course, about the spirit of Christmas smile
Another beautyful one Ellie. I enjoyed your series
EJWilkins: I'm glad you've enjoyed these Richard, they're beautiful birds - I was lucky to see them smile

This a likey for me Ellie, the focus is so good, stunning picture again, love the whole serie but I love 'hunting birds' have a nice weekend, any skating at your place??
EJWilkins: Wow, thanks Astrid.
Skating? No, not here although during the 'Dreams Weekend' Wightlink Ferries (a service between here and the Isle of Wight) had organised a rink to raise money for charity - not real ice, a hard plastic surface.

this is a cracker Ellie. You caught him with the beak open, he looks angry and poised. mal
EJWilkins: I don't think this chap was angry, more wanting to be noticed wink Delighted you like the picture Mal
Beautiful shot to end the series.

It is a shame that Christmas has become so over commercialised.

Happily both our daughters and their partners will be with us as usual so I have have the most important people in my life with me. I expect we will laugh a lot and I will watch Dr Who!

Have a great Christmas Ellie
EJWilkins: We're as guilty as most people of spending too much, but I like to think we know why we do it. Immediate family here together for Christmas, which is a special thing for us.
Enjoy your Christmas too Bill smile

OOOOOOOOOOOh, what a stunning looking bird Ellie.
EJWilkins: I was amazed by how white this owl is, and how well it would blend into a snowy landscape
wow Ellie the best of the bunch for me, superbsmile
EJWilkins: Thanks Tim, I've got two favourites really ... or three ... tsk, can't make my mind up while I like best.

Perfect timing Ellie - caught that critical moment perfectly. That and the pin-sharp focus make this a cracker. Lovely.
These are just brilliant Ellie.
Excellent detail. Nice work. All the best, Dave.
