Santa's snooze

Last chance for a short snooze Santa. It's Christmas Eve, tonight will be your busiest night of the year.

I hope he wakes up in time ...

Track Santa's progress around the world here at Norad http://www.noradsanta.org/

.....

~ Does Santa Claus = Saint Nicholas? ~
Perhaps they are one and the same, and I know people on the European mainland will say so, although dates for his gifts arriving vary from 5th or 6th December through to the British date of 25th December. In some places gifts arrive on 6th January to celebrate Twelfth Night, marking the arrival of Kings Caspar, Melchior and Balthazaar with their gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh and carrying the warning of Herod's genocidal plans, precipitating the little family's flight into Egypt.

Here in UK people are suddenly claiming that the red coat was only introduced in a 1933 Coca Cola advertisement, and previously, rather than a Bishop's red gown, Father Christmas would have worn green - if this is the case then our kindly gentleman who is able to travel faster than light is a Green Man rather than a European Saint.

I don't know the answers, but I do know that in our house Father Christmas has always worn red, and we once found a tiny scrap of fabric caught on the fire surround.

I wonder how much of this, the untold history of Santa's Kingdom at the North Pole, is true?
.....

I hope you share your Christmas Day with those you love.

Meryy Christms to you Ellie, this is possibly the most beautiful capture of a Santa Claus on Shutterchance. As a former associate of The Coca-Cola Company, I too was led to believe that Sundbum's interpretation of Santa was th origin of the red clothing, can't tell if this is true though. I guess it is also a nice story to tell for the busiest season of the year, also for The Coca-Cola Company

This is what our American Santa looks like, Ellie, and not at all like Holland's Sinterklaas, whom I've only recently met!

It still tickles me to think Coca Cola had anything to do with Santa in any way, especially since I live in Coke's backyard. I love it. smile

I think our Santa is basically a Victorian invention and is different from the continental one based on St Nicholas. Ours is Father Christmas and is a mish mash of old Norse legends of Odin flying through the air in a chariot and all sorts of other things.
The red suit was not a Coca Cola Invention. The red suit has been around for about 300 years!

I thought it was common knowledge Santa Claus is Walt Disney's Baloo in randomly selected clothing from the costume department.
Ellie's fine portrait supports this view.

Well Ellie about 20 years ago we celebrated Christmas without 'the Santa Claus' we have Sinterklaas at the 5th of Dec.
but because of the American influence, we have the 'Santa Claus'too, but for me he does not have a meaning.....Christams yes, the birth of Jesus Have a Merry Christmas with your family and dear ones.

grin That's just how I feel at the moment. Good un' Ellie. Hope its a lovely Christmas for you and the family. Chris
There's a Turkish connection to St Nicolas too. I've been to his church which is near Antalya... but how that connects up with Finland and reindeers just beats me.

Have a great day tomorrow.

I had a cuddle from Father Christmas last Christmas when I took the children to meet him in Finland smile His reindeer were just fantastic!

Love this image of him.

I think the red coat evolved from the green coat but I had to laugh the other day when my daughter informed me that it was Coca Cola who gave him his red coat.
Charming picture, Ellie! I want to wish you and all the Shutterchancers the warmest of holidays!

Interesting approach to the commercial fact of Santa Claus. The jolly round man with the white beard did originate from the Coke ads of the early twenties. This was built on by other companies, e.g. Hallmark invented Rudolph the rednosed reindeer later on. Santa Claus, north pole, gifts on a sleigh, everyone visited on Christmas night - all of that is commercial invention mainly from the US.

Saint Nicholaas is a Bishop (red cloak) from in Spain verrry long ago. Was kind to children and gave a lot to them. Gifts are exchanged 5th December to commemorate the Saint.

I have researched all of this stuff some years ago. Main thing is that the two chracters are very different in many ways. Mainly the one lived, died and was sainted. The other one is supposed to be building toys somewhere on the North Pole with little elves and such helping him.

And I am sure the commercial gang did borrow the colour red for the Santa's clothing - although style definitely not a bishop's gear.
