photoblog image Not quite straight

Not quite straight

An old cast iron down pipe, cracked and pulling away from the wall.

What fascinated me more than anything was that none of the verticals in the building are truly vertical, and none of the horizontals are quite horizontal.

It was drizzling, which is why there's some wet sheen on the slate roof, but virtually no shadows.

Character can't be built into a house - it gets weathered out of it. Nice one... H.

Drunken builders add character to their creations...nice one, Ellie.
Lovely colour and detail, Ellie. Where was this? (:o)
EJWilkins: Thanks Roz, it was on this building here

I love the independant thinking of this down pipe.... shows great character. I think i would have cropped out the slates. Lovely. richard
EJWilkins: Oooh, aren't these crops a nuisance! I ended up leaving the slates because I thought they looked a bit like a frill at the top, which made the picture less about straight lines - or crooked lines. I thought the brightness balanced the shine of the water leaking out of the pipe a bit too - maybe it didn't. We can only learn when other people share their ideas, and for that I'm grateful to you. Thanks. smile

It looks as if it is thinking! Sort of a fun picture as well.

Great in simplicity and contrasts.

The pipe reminds me of discovering that many things are "not quite straight" and being a little amused by the discovery.

Just love this capture, great detail and color, very well spotted, have a nice weekend Ellie
Very well spotted Rosalyn. I like the colours and the texture
Ooooh...that's gonna cost a fortune to put that right! Cast Iron pipe and all that!

:o)
EJWilkins: Err, yes, I think it might cost quite a bit to fix, because the stone has been split too. I don't think the immediate locals will be too worried though - it was here

Love the colours, reminds me of my horizons
I love the old cast iron gutters and down pipes. It's great when something so prosaic is transformed into something rather grand

It looks like it's had a drink to many Elliesmile

Nice composition and the red guttering and spout against the honey coloured stone looks great. Nice shot.
Enjoy your weekend.

You do spot some strange things. Does make an interesting photograph though.
EJWilkins: I probably do notice some odd things, I think that's part of the fun of being out with the camera smile
Well spotted Ellie. So often we don't look up when we walk around with our cameras, and miss good subjects like this.

We have an expression in french, when somebody has really got a good sense of lines and dimensions : having the compass in the eye ... But here, I think that the one who made it had really the compass in the eye, it isn't an expression ... lol

This could be in Amsterdam, Ellie, except for the design (which I've never seen). But crookedness is the norm here instead of the rare occasion. I LOVE it. And the colors are wonderful.
what a great find!
Very good composition. Well done!
Funny one Ellie, I love it !!
