Grey Squirrel - Sciurus carolinensis

Oops! I've been caught out.

This little beastie is pretending to be a bird! It visits the bird table every day and is managing to keep itself in very good condition.

We've learned not to try to win the, "Squirrels mustn't eat the bird food" battle, otherwise the bird feeders end up somewhere down the garden because squirrels are both quite strong and quite determined. We make sure there's plenty of food for them to reach.

The apple is pushed onto a nail that's proud of the bird table, one large apple (doesn't have to be best quality) lasts several days and is a tasty treat for the bird visitors too.
Thanks to Coolpix / Liam Beattie for the idea

Methinks yon squirrel has a sleek and startled look!

Fine study, Eleanor, and justifies the apple enticement.

Ellie, you are so thoughtful to think of all of the creatures who like to visit your yard! This is such a wonderful close-up. I've never been able to get as good as a shot...the squirrels always run away.
Hey!

I've seen your friend here this morning!

We have the same squirrels here.

This portrait is superb!

Aha! So you have this squirrel problem in the UK, too, I see! That is a cool idea for a win-win situation. What we do in the States is to grease the bird-feeder pole! smile

This is a beautifully focused and sharp image, Ellie!

Excellent full frame picture.

No use trying to allocate the food in naturae. About as useless as trying to keep my two dogs restricted each to its own bowl. I just loose it when they start growling at each other.

He is so cute. I wonder why more people don't put out squirrel food, then they would not have to raid the bird feeder. Good for you, Ellie.
Lovely shot Ellie. Grey squirrels are damned destructive but very cute. Quite a conundrum
Great capture Ellie. Great framing!

Caught red-handed! Great shot - it's difficult to get annoyed with them even when they steal the birds' food - they look so appealing.

CLEVER, I love this picture, I can tell in his eyes he senses he is caught, priceless picture here....the focus is spot on.
A grand capture Ellie, he just looks the part. We used to have these little creatures in our garden in Birmingham but have not seen any since we moved back up north.
Just hope he doesn't start a family in your roof space!

A real joy to this, Ellie. I know these things are vermin but you just have to admire them sometimes, as seen here. Love the "caught red handed" look with the bits of apple on his face. Superb!

This is wonderful and the whole series this week has been great as well. I'm really jealous of people that have hanging feeders in their gardens ! I have to rely on my neighbor as my cat has learned to climb feeders by watching the resident squirrel.

I hope you have some more for us El.
