Monument to the Discoveries / Padrão dos descobrimentos

This is the whole Monument to the Discoveries / Padrão dos descobrimentos structure, standing 52 metres high on the north bank of the River Tagus at  Belém, near Lisbon.

One of those 'wrong place, wrong time' pictures - it would have been nice to have shown all of it, including the steps leading upwards from the ground, but there was a large vehicle in the way and not enough time to wait for it to move.

Nice one, Ellie.
Allows me to see it is not just a tiny cake decoration.
EJWilkins: Thanks Ray, I think I got the order right too, with this one coming last. smile
Nice of you having kept this one for the end of your beautiful series. It gives us a nice idea of the size of the monument!
EJWilkins: Big, isn't it smile
Even more impressive than the close-ups.
EJWilkins: It's a heck of a thing to see Mary.

Superb, Ellie. Pity about the cars but not much you can do, I know.
EJWilkins: The van would have been even worse. I'm not thrilled by the cars being there, but I suppose they give an idea of scale.
Sometimes you have to take things when you know they conditions are not ideal Ellie. Thanks for showing us the whole monument.
EJWilkins: That's the point isn't it, we don't always have time to stand and wait for "the ideal" picture, and have to make do with the best we can manage
I'm glad you've posted this and shown the whole monument. Very impressive
EJWilkins: Glad you think so Bill smile

Thanks for posting this view, Ellie.. I wonder how big the munment was.
EJWilkins: I expect it's bigger than you expected ... smile
Great photo of an impresive monument, shame about the cars being there but as you say give a guide to how big this structure is
