Santa Maria do Olival, Tomar

Perfect Rose

The rose window of the Church of Santa Maria do Olival in Tomar.

The window is positioned centrally above the west door and is exactly 8 metres across, leaving only one metre's width of masonry to either side.

Like the way this just pops out of the blackness.

Simply gorgeous image, Ellie.
Ellie! It's been a while again. i really like this when i saw it on my buddies page and hand to come comment. I even quite like the perspective distortion. The black background and no border work really really well too!
EJWilkins: I'm flitting back and to Iain, won't be around regularly until early autumn because we're very busy just now. Hope you're OK smile

Lovely shot, my kind of picture..with symmetry and curves, yum!
This is very nice...I like the way it is just the rose window -but nothing else. The black background is the perfect companion to this great capture.
EJWilkins: I had another shot that included some of the masonry but somehow this one seemed to be much better. I'm glad I made that choice.
And now we have...through the round window. Ellie. This is a super design btw.
EJWilkins: *grin* grin

As far as rose windows go, this is one of the simpler ones I've seen, Ellie, but nonetheless striking! It makes me want to stare at it!
EJWilkins: Very simple, but perfectly in keeping with the church. We found it eye-catching too, odd really when there are so many splendid stained glass rose windows around. Sensory overload perhaps?

Excellent Image Ellie
Brilliant Ellie, just brilliant!
This is really my kind of image Ellie. Great capture.
I can only echo what everyone else has said. I wonder how the old craftsmen managed to get everything so precise without "the wonders of digital technology"?
EJWilkins: The church is a masterpiece of engineering, apparently everything revolves around the number eight - 8 on its side = infinity. Eight pillars, measurements of exactly eight and so on. It's a fascinating place.

Whenever I take pictures like this Ellie they never seem to work. This one does...beautifully
EJWilkins: Mine don't usually either Bill, which is why so few ever get seen. wink

I like the symmetry in this, Ellie. A great example of the stonemason's work, by the sound of it.
It looks very large but very delicate too Ellie

Great use of the black background.

PS. I see someone has written your name on that one secion ...
EJWilkins: Aha, that means the resolution on your screen is similar to mine. Subtle though, I thought wink
Must have been especially impressive when piercing a wall with glass was a high-risk venture.
Great image, Ellie. Simply made for this black background. (:o)
