photoblog image Santa Maria do Olival, Tomar

Santa Maria do Olival, Tomar

Madonna and child

This Madonna and Child, we were told, is rare because the baby is held in Mary's right hand and he is facing her rather than looking outwards.

The upper section of the statue is carved from a single piece of stone, and beautifully decorated as you can see.

Your excellent image allows the beauty of the sculpture to be seen, Ellie.
EJWilkins: Thanks Ray

Yes, beautifully composed with the candles and lighting, and decorative border.

It's beyond my comprehension how skillful artists were in creating such magnificence with patience and love. Superb
EJWilkins: They certainly must have been proud of their work, their skill is a gift isn't it?
Agreed Ellie: that is rare. I've never seen a carving such as this
EJWilkins: No, I haven't seen one like thisd either ... and you know Chris, the church is so like St Cross, with the same atmosphere.
I think you have done us proud here Ellie. richard
EJWilkins: Kind of you to say so Richard, thanks

This is an unique statue, it is beautiful, the shapes and colours are a delight, the candles do make the picture and composition.
EJWilkins: Thanks, it is really beautiful. I hope one day you can see it

A quick glance made me think that she was balancing the stone mullion on her head! I like the balance in this with the two candles and the two windows.
EJWilkins: Ah, yes, the mullion was a bit of a worry but it almost looks like an extension of the crown - if you're into creative thinking wink
It is indeed a fine sculpture Ellie and I like the way you have pictured it.
EJWilkins: Probably not the best picture of it that'll ever be taken, but I think I did it proud

Very well composed
EJWilkins: Thanks for the compliment
Nice one, I'm very fond of this kind of shot !
EJWilkins: Thanks, it was a statue that could be looked at for a very long time, it was so beautiful
A beautiful statue Ellie but I am going to carp slightly beacuse if you had moved round a little bit the moulding in the pillar behind her wouldn't have looked like it is on her head. Sorry. Brian.
EJWilkins: It was one of those "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situations because the light through the windows was so strong, even with RAW. I did try to get a front-on picture, but it didn't work out as well as I'd hoped. So, was left with this one - and I was as worried as you are about the boss directly above her head, but nobody else has mentioned it so I thought I'd got away with it!
You can rename yourself "sharp eyes" wink
Lovely photo, lovely statue and thanks for the information.
EJWilkins: You could go there you know, it's only next door wink
