Ophrys tenthredinifera Willd

It took quite a long time to identify this orchid we saw growing in scrubby grassland near the sea in February, near the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Cape, Cape Especial (Cabo Espichel,"Nossa Senhora's sanctuary do Cabo" or "Santuário da Pedra Mua") Portugal.

The colours didn't quite match any pictures we could find, but the rest of the description seemed right so we're fairly confident.

Unusual "expression" for an orchid, Ellie.

Most are "stern" or "sultry"...this one is "ratbag".

I wouldn't be surprised to learn its name is "Ophrys Bozotheclownera Rustic".

I love it.
EJWilkins: I love it too, the "clown" name certainly would be appropriate if only a taxonomist had a sense of humour wink
I know this is daft but it reminds me of Basil Brush laughing.
EJWilkins: Hah! Yes!

The variants on the webpage tend to confirm for me that your identification is spot on.

In your picture it reminds me of a muppit or a laughing hyena made up for the ball. smile Wouldn't mind if I had some in my garden.
EJWilkins: You'll have to see if they can be bought, I wouldn't know if they'd grow in your garden wink
Wow, it almost looks like an insect doesn't it. Great shot.
EJWilkins: It's amazing how many wild orchids resemble insects, remarkable evolution

Wonderful, great DOF....great colours.
EJWilkins: It's those two top "teeth" that do it!
Superb capture Ellie. Great use of the light here!
EJWilkins: Thanks Richard
Looks alien, well presented
EJWilkins: IT does rather, but then most orchids do - I think

Before I'd even read the comments, Basil Brush laughing came straight to mind... ha ha

What does that say about us all?

Gorgeous colours and pristine detail, if I could just get that damned fox out of my head!!

Have a great weekend smile
