Queluz National Palace

Neptune Fountain by Bernini

A truly impressive fountain by one of the masters of sculpture, Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) in the "Neptune Garden" of Queluz National Palace.

The little fish on the helmets/spheres on the balustrade would send jets of water inwards. The lead collar protected the stonework from water.

All this was being restored when we visited in 2007. If you would like to see it for yourself, the Palace is - here - on Flash Earth

Oh yes. Bernini. Isn't his work all over Rome?? Indeed. And you caught yourself a sunny day, Ellie.
EJWilkins: Yes, that's the chap Ginnie, his stuff is everywhere

I just read an article on Bernini. Interesting fellow, to say the least, but he certainly knew his sculpture. Good work as usual, Ellie!
EJWilkins: That's a coincidence Martin

Now I like this one.great detail.great back ground
EJWilkins: Lovely place too wink
This is a gorgeous thing Ellie: a bit like a scaled down version of the huge thing Mr Phillips too Chad & I to see at Whitley court
EJWilkins: A bit OTT for our garden Chris, but it's the sort of thing you can spend ages looking at because it's such a complex piece
This is gorgeous Ellie. The lighting is superb!
EJWilkins: Pure sunshine Richard smile

Another beautiful fountain, but I am captivated by the building behind it - the colors are so interesting!
EJWilkins: The building behind is the Palace, the inside is wonderful!

What a beautiful sculpture and it seams to be a wonderful place to visit.
EJWilkins: It is Frida, and I'm sure it's even better now than when we were there

Lovely clear shot Ellie, like the reflections in the lily pond.
EJWilkins: There are just enough reflections not to be too fussy or intrusive, at least that was what I thought. Good design, clever sculptor
The Palace looks very beautiful Ellie. I bet you could spend a lot of time there.
EJWilkins: We spent a half day there, could have stayed longer
A beautiful fountain, with so much intricate detail. And a good photo of it too - love that reflection in the water. Those hedges and trees look so immaculate they must employ someone just to keep them trimmed like that.
EJWilkins: It was immaculate, which is something rather special about the way they look after places. There's respect.
How lucky to have the square to yourself Ellie, a nicely composed view of a beautiful place.
EJWilkins: One of those "mad dog" things Brian, it was hot, sunny and everybody sane was indoors or sitting somewhere cool having a nice drink!
Wow! That is quite something!
EJWilkins: It was/is beautiful Mike. Needs some restoration but I think all that's 'in hand' along with the Cheere works. There's a lot there that you'd enjoy looking at
Great composition, Ellie. Ligth, Contrast, Detail. Really great.
EJWilkins: Gosh, thanks Fabrice

A wonderfully composed pic of a great sculpture! I like the skyblue reflections in the waterlilies- pond and the lizards lying in the sun on the balustrade- I would like to look at the face of the Nereide on the left side- the Bernini-faces are mostly looking as if just going into ecstasies! She seems to admire the masculine looking Neptun! A beautiful photo in each detail!
EJWilkins: A close-up crop isn't really good enough to put on here Philine, but looking at the original you're absolutely right - she's looking adoringly up at Neptune

Oh, sorry , fishes (not lizards)!
EJWilkins: No worry, you wouldn't expect fish to be out of water wink
I wasn't aware Bernini had works in Portugal. Great shot.
EJWilkins: I was surprised too, although I'm not sure why now because this was a Royal Palace.
Another amazing fountain !
EJWilkins: a wonderful fountain Zeb smile

Honestly, Ellie, I'm more interested in what's going on in this pond. smile There is so much to work with there. I'd spend quite a bit of time shooting leaves and reflections. I hope you did. smile
EJWilkins: Not then, no real time, but if we went back I'd do things like that and ignore the rest of the family! wink
