photoblog image Rose week #3

Rose week #3

This is another flower from the Old Cemetery in Southampton.

The flower buds were deep red, the flowers faded to this colour as they aged so the plant looked multi-coloured. The flowers were 'normal' sized, and in clusters.

I think it is a type of Moss Rose - with masses of small prickles on the stems, making them look as if they are covered in moss, rather than long sharp thorns. You can just about see some above the flower.

a bit of a messy flower
EJWilkins: Very messy Chantal, not at all organised wink
The colors just jump right out, a beautiful composition.

Beautiful composition Ellie. I love the colour!
EJWilkins: Glad you do Richard, thanks
It looks as though it has just turned from its best Ellie but your picture is none the worse for that.

Pretty even as it starts to lose its freshness. Lovely complex layers.
EJWilkins: Past its best yes, but I thought still tantaslisngly beautiful
I love roses like this, especially when they are overgrown and sort of gone native! tongue
EJWilkins: You'd love wandering round the cemetery in the summer Bill
Even before I read the comment my reaction to this photo was that this was a good old fashioned rose. It looks very soft, and it looks as though it has a strong and sweet old fashioned scent.

A lovely photo.
EJWilkins: My parents had a moss rose like this by the front door, it was gorgeous, although it didn't have the range of colours/shades of this one

Looks beyond its best, Ellie. Despite that, though, there is a deep richness to the lovely colours.
EJWilkins: Yes, past its best but still lovely colours
