Santa Maria do Olival, Tomar

Madonna and Child

Christianity and Christmas is all about a little boy who was born in a stable because his parents were far from their home - having travelled for a census, for taxation, and had nowhere else to lay their heads.

Angels told ordinary people, shepherds, of his birth and Wise Men travelled many miles, navigating by the stars, to give the baby precious gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh.

Not long after his birth this little boy's family fled to a neighbouring country, Egypt, to escape persecution and genocide. The King, Herod, was scared by stories he had heard of a new King being born and set out to kill all baby boys who could grow to be a threat to his throne.

The family survived and returned home, the little boy grew up to do wondrous things and become a preacher and leader of men. He was a gentle man, a man of peace.

The little boy was Jesus Christ, the Son of God. His mother was Mary, his earthly father Joseph was a carpenter.

We celebrate his birth, the Christ Mass, by decorating our homes and streets and on 25th December we bring family together, eat a special meal and give and receive gifts in his name.

I wish that Christmas brings you peace, happiness and fulfilment.

A lovely image, Ellie and so topical, of course. I like the symmetry in this and you've done a good job on getting the verticals spot on.

Merry Christmas.

Happy Christmas to you and your dears! Bill is right and I agree totally with him- I like the statue- Queen Mary- and knowing the coming events she often looks like here already so sad- and her baby who reacts like a real baby! You are the only blogger who reminds of those Bible stories! And Santa Marta is always venerated (candles, flowers, ears) in the still katholic Portugal!
I think you've said it all here Ellie

Very well put Ellie - I think many people tend to forget the original meaning of Christmas in the rush to get to the shops! But of course, Christmas is also the time of the Midwinter celebration - the Pagan Yuletide when we bring greenery into the house. I like to think of it as a combination of both. Have a good day.

This is what Christmas is to me, acknowledging the birth of a baby boy who grew into a man who taught us peace and to love our neighbour and continues to live in our hearts still.

Happy Christmas Ellie
