Parque das Nações, Lisbon

Vasco da Gama Tower

This is on the north bank of the River Tagus at Lisbon, was built to mark the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama's voyage of discovery to India.

Designed by Maria Leonor Janeiro and built by Nicolas Jacobs.

The tower is 145 metres (575 ft) high and is meant to look like a sail. At the top is a viewing platform, the area inside is currently (2008/9) being converted to a luxury hotel.

** addenda/possible correction**
A "local" source says that the tower is out of use while an hotel is constructed at the base - you can see this in the picture. The hotel will have 128 rooms on 20 floors.

Construction in Portugal takes some time because every new building has to be able to withstand an earthquake greater than that of 1st November 1755, which has been estimated at greater than 9 on the Richter Scale
.

Ellie how big is the area the hotel is being built in?
That is a very cool shot and a nice little lesson.
I like the photo and the commentary.

I feel disappointed that such a large hotel can be built is such a place. I suppose Portugal is the same as Spain - money talks louder than all other considerations! Perhaps I am misjudging things, and it will be a beautiful building, complimenting the river, park and tower.
Beautiful capture Ellie!
I'm sure it will be a wonderful building when finished and a great tibute to the past. I like your composition with this Ellie.
Sheila has a good point Ellie, but isn't it the same everywhere these days. A very good picture, I hope you get the chance to go back and see the finish building.
How do you get your suitcases up those stairs
