At Rollestone

Weather cannon

I spotted this little weather vane on top of one of the buildings at Rollestone Camp, near Salisbury.

I took the picture whilst I was walking, so was quite pleased with the result.

Believe it or not, the lower part of the picture has been desaturated but not the upper section - typical British "grey skies"!

This does well desaturated, Ellie. You know me and weather vanes! I've never seen one with a canon, though!
EJWilkins: I know you like them Ginnie, there are a couple more this week wink
Very well spotted, Ellie.
EJWilkins: Thanks Kay
That's an unusual one set against the summer sky!
EJWilkins: It's very unusual, and Brian has managed to set me off on a hunt for the background - why a cannon?

No blur?! (considering how you were walking) Amazing. I can't say I miss the english weather tongue but that is an interesting weather vane, I'm with zed, I didn't figure it out till I read Ginnie's comment lol
EJWilkins: I know, I was rather pleased it came out!

Haven't a clue why the text I wrote isn't showing for you, which explains what this is. sad

Well spotted and captured Ellie!
EJWilkins: Thanks Frida smile
An unusual vane..but well seen Ellie.
EJWilkins: It is unusual Ron, and not very big either smile
It's amazing some of things that are used as the centrepiece of weather vanes Ellie, this is one in question. It would be good to know the history of this.
EJWilkins: Hmm, I really and truly hadn't thought of that Brian. I wonder if there's a weather vane somewhere on all of this sort of training camp that tells something of its history?
I'm wondering this little weather cane is an oblique reference to RA or RAOC, perhaps. But did each of these have their own place to train?

I have no idea how, or where, to look to find out. Do you have any ideas?

Never seen a cannon on a weathervain before. Well spotted, Ellie.
EJWilkins: No, I hadn't either. And to be honest I hadn't expected to see one and we were in a bit of a hurry so it was camera out, click, camera away and a huge helping of keeping fingers crossed that it came out cleanly!
Bang goes our summersad
EJWilkins: Kerboom!
nice
B&W works well.
with grey skies one can work in vain to get the vane clear without rupturing a vein.
or something like that.
Cheers
Rob
EJWilkins: Punny indeed! wink
Very unusual, Ellie. Never seen a cannon on one before, but appropriate if this is a military place.
EJWilkins: That's right Sheila, it is appropriate.

Now I'd like to find out why and when it was put there, but I think I'll be searching for a while
Now that is an interesting weather vane Ellie. Well spotted.
EJWilkins: It is interesting, thanks Chad. wink
