Green Woodpecker

In our garden

Green Woodpecker Picus viridis

Picture 2 of 5

This female woodpecker was about 30 ft from the house, determinedly looking for ants.

Each of the pictures is taken from indoors, through a single-glazed window.

.....

The RSPB shows that the male has a red stripe beneath the black eye patch, the female has a black stripe.

The Green Woodpecker is the largest of the three British Woodpeckers, it's about 30 - 36 cm, 12 - 15 inches long.

They like to eat ants, which they dig out of the ground.

A very potent-looking beak...look out Ants!
EJWilkins: It doesn't look anywhere as sturdy from a distance!

She's certainly not bothered by your presence Ellie

I have the feeling you've gone away...
EJWilkins: She was there for about ten minutes. I took loads of pictures but because she moved so quickly far too many of them were useless. But - I had enough for this little series smile

Attractive red blaze on its head
EJWilkins: It is, isn't it, and it seems so odd too because the green gives such good camouflage against the grass
After yesterday's prettiness, he's now giving you the evil eye!
EJWilkins: It's such an intent look isn't it.

I like her red "hair" grin
EJWilkins: It looks a bit like a Mohican doesn't it?
Very well captured Ellie.
EJWilkins: Thanks Linda
Lovely markings on the top of its head Ellie.
EJWilkins: I thought it was a bit odd to see the gaps between the red feathers, but I've never managed to get a decent picture of these bird before so didn't really know what it would look like
