Green Woodpecker

In our garden

Green Woodpecker Picus viridis

Picture 3 of 5

This female woodpecker was about 30 ft from the house, determinedly digging for ants - and doing it very quickly too.

Each of the pictures is taken from indoors, through a single-glazed window.

.....

The RSPB shows that the male has a red stripe beneath the black eye patch, the female has a black stripe.

The Green Woodpecker is the largest of the three British Woodpeckers, it's about 30 - 36 cm, 12 - 15 inches long.

They like to eat ants, which they dig out of the ground.

Green Woodpeckers are lovely looking birds but they aught to rename them as Green Lawnpeckers!
Good to see this bird in action.
A great series Ellie. I love the pose here!
I've never been as close to this bird as I am now. Nice series of shots Janet.
Congratulations on this shot, well done to get such clarity. You've got every detail.
