Green Woodpecker

In our garden

Green Woodpecker Picus viridis

Picture 4 of 5

This female woodpecker was about 30 ft from the house, digging for ants.

Each of the pictures is taken from indoors, through a single-glazed window.

I like this picture because the bird is looking directly at the camera. I'm fairly sure she spotted me, but didn't seem worried, nor did she seem worried that her beak was dirty.

.....

The RSPB shows that the male has a red stripe beneath the black eye patch, the female has a black stripe.

The Green Woodpecker is the largest of the three British Woodpeckers, it's about 30 - 36 cm, 12 - 15 inches long.

They like to eat ants, which they dig out of the ground.

I think she's seen you Ellie!
Now, I think she has spotted you. Checking to see if you have anything for her.
Her head patch seems a bit thinned out. Perhaps she is moulting?
EJWilkins: I noticed that too Mary, I think she's probably a young bird and wearing her grown up feathers for the first time
She looks a bit grumpy Ellie, not happy about the camera perhaps.
Did she go after this shot Ellie. Looks as if the warning was there.
I love the way she is looking at you Ellie!
I think her little red hat is cute...
