Green Woodpecker

In our garden

Green Woodpecker Picus viridis

Picture 5 of 5

This female woodpecker was about 30 ft from the house, digging for ants.

Each of the pictures is taken from indoors, through a single-glazed window.

This picture may not be the sharpest, but I think it's the luckiest because she's got an insect in her beak.

.....

The RSPB shows that the male has a red stripe beneath the black eye patch, the female has a black stripe.

The Green Woodpecker is the largest of the three British Woodpeckers, it's about 30 - 36 cm, 12 - 15 inches long.

They like to eat ants, which they dig out of the ground.

Now would be a good time to remove your Ant disguise, Ellie!

Really nice series. She would need a lot of ants though to be satisfied smile

Not much of a meal, though, Ellie! However, the turned head and the bug make the image very special.
