Setley Pond

Messing about with boats

Taken last Tuesday when Sir Tiff and I met up for a very pleasant, if slightly damp, day out. If you haven't already seen his picture of these models yachts and their sailing masters it's here.

The boats are sailed by members of the "Solent Radio Control Model Boat Club". According to their website :-

The Yachting Section meets at the lake on Tuesday and Friday Mornings at 10 am and the Scale Section on Thursday and Sunday mornings at 10 am

There's usually somebody there with a model boat each morning of the week, and in almost any weather. The 'scale section' includes scale models of almost anything, from battleships through to lifeboats and merchant vessels.

It works really well, EeJay, if you crop the top back to waterline.
EJWilkins: Yep, I'd hoped somebody would say that. I looked and saw several options for crops, but couldn't make my mind up which I liked best so ended up leaving it 'as was' ... well, almost.
Lovely photo, and what an eye opener. I thought model boats were for boys on ponds. Another bit of my ongoing education.
EJWilkins: Oh no Sheila, it's a very serious business. They practice and have competitions too. The 'scale models' are probably more photogenic and might cost a lot more, but it was the wrong day for them. I think it's a brilliant hobby, but haven't been able to persuade any of the men of the family to take it up!

I thought we had a splendid day out Ellie: and the sun did shine later on! These blokes & boats were a delight and one day I've just got to go to see the Scale Section too
EJWilkins: We did indeed have a splendid day Chris. smile We were incredibly lucky with the weather too, it's been foul since then. We must arrange another day to see the scale models.

I wondered straight away if this was the same location as Chris's image I like the reflections here Ellie looks like huge fun.
EJWilkins: It's brilliant fun to watch. Both these and the scale models race, and it can get quite tense at times, especially near the buoys.

Wonderful capture
EJWilkins: Glad you like it
Steve does this as his hobby Ellie, he makes and sails warships smile
EJWilkins: He'll have to come over to Setley on the day they sail (?) scale models, he'd have a brilliant time.
If he does, please let me know ... there's a handy pub for lunch!
Good to see men of my generation enjoying their time together, I guess the local pub will be busy after they call it a day.
EJWilkins: I think most of them bring their own snacks/thermoses etc, but I'd bet some go to the nearest pub for a bar meal.
lot of toys and no children! sad! smile
EJWilkins: No, they have a fantastic time and it's all very friendly competition too. Not a cheap hobby by any meeans, either
I still can't get my head round radio controlled sailing boats.
EJWilkins: Yes, it's a bit of a challenge isn't it. But when you see them in action .. it works!

big boys with their toys!

nice caputre.
EJWilkins: With their fairly expensive toys smile
Good reflections, Ellie. Unusual to have them so far apart from the subject as those of the blokes on the bank.
EJWilkins: I was tempted to show just the reflections on the left, but decided it wouldn't suit the scene or the comparison with Tiff's picture.
Thinking about the physics of the reflections - I was standing on the opposite bank, almost level with the men so was looking down towards the water
Great capture with the reflections of the "sailors" standind on the bank Ellie!
Now you mention it, I can see what you mean about the reflections on the left. They make a separate picture. I think you chose right, though.
