photoblog image Lunch time

Lunch time

Migrant Hawker (Aeshna mixta)

This is one of those pictures that makes you ask questions, such as "What do dragonflies eat?" Answer:- Some dragonflies eat flies!

I actually had no idea it was eating anything until the pictures were downloaded, but I'm delighted to have a series showing this fly getting gradually less identifiable until all that's left is a wing.

I'm fairly confident with the identification, but am happy to be corrected.

Unbelievable capture, Ellie. I wonder if the fly is impaled on one of the thorns?

Sure looks like a fly, Ellie...Dragonflies are wonderful hunters, and they especially love spiders.

This is a fine image.
Some dragonflies eat mosquitoes and blackflies. I love the colours in this shot and of course the feeling one gets of the precarious place this dragonfly finds itself. Really well done.
