Parque das Nações, Lisbon
Vasco da Gama Tower
This is on the north bank of the River Tagus at Lisbon, was built to mark the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama's voyage of discovery to India.
Designed by Maria Leonor Janeiro and built by Nicolas Jacobs
The tower is 145 metres (575 ft) high and is meant to look like a sail. At the top is a viewing platform, the area inside is currently (2008/9) being converted to a luxury hotel.**
A "local" source says that the tower is out of use while an hotel is constructed at the base - you can see this in the picture. The hotel will have 128 rooms on 20 floors.
Construction in Portugal takes some time because every new building has to be able to withstand an earthquake greater than that of 1st November 1755, which has been estimated at greater than 9 on the Richter Scale.
